Join me in a virtual challenge during the month of November: 4 SUMMITS in 4 WEEKS – York Nordic Virtual Walking Challenge & Motivation Study for Research.

  • Whether you’re preparing for a trip, staying balanced for those with a neurological condition, rebuilding strength after joint replacement surgery, starting a weight loss journey, or simply seeking motivation to walk more — this challenge meets you where you are and motivates you to keep moving forward.
  • Each week is a different challenge.
    • As you accomplish your goals each day, you’ll get closer to completing your challenges.
    • You’ll get material describing these routes so you can learn more about them:
      • Mt. Washington (USA) – your first summit of focus and persistence
      • Grand Canyon Rim to Rim (USA) – a test of steady progress and inner drive
      • Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) – a climb toward balance and resilience
      • Cinque Terre (Italy) – a celebration of rhythm, beauty, and joy in movement

You can sign up, and the $29.99 registration fee is reduced 50% by using this discount code: LEROY50. My registration cost $15.

Your challenge package will include:

  • Motivation Maps – 4 maps mailed to help visualize your progress and track personal goals
  • Daily motivational messages – text messages with pics/videos to keep you inspired and accountable
  • Goal-setting guidance – to help you clarify your “why” — balance, activity, strength, or adventure
  • Weekly reflection – shared anonymized reflections from the entire community
  • Research summary report – mailed to you to summarize group change in mood and motivation
  • Carved wooden medal – mailed to you to celebrate your journey and your contribution to research

When you register, you’ll get to set walking/physical activity goals.

  • There’s a lot of latitude on your goal-setting.
  • My own goals are distance per week goals, but you’ll be able to set your own goals. One person wasn’t able to walk so used it to stay consistent and motivated with stretching exercises.

After you register:

  • You’ll get a text message from 833-942-5477 and be asked to reply by texting WALK25.
  • Add the phone number as a contact so you can receive motivational messages.
  • You’ll get a link to a survey. It’s pretty simple.
    • The questions include a request for a mailing address for sending you your completion medal and a series of questions about attitude.
    • I think that will be used to see how your attitude about your goals has changed by the end of the challenge. We hope it will be a positive change!

More about it:

  • The challenge is not only a fitness event, but a behaviour change intervention: combining technology (text messages, mapping), motivational content, community sharing, and research.
  • The “for all levels” design means participants can customise their step goals and walking volumes according to ability and context.
  • The mailed physical items (maps + medal) add a tactile, commitment-reinforcing component.
  • The virtual/simulated route model helps build narrative and engagement — walking “through” Mt Washington, Grand Canyon, Kilimanjaro, Cinque Terre.
  • The earlier mis-print of the number underscores importance of clear instructions and verifying registration before broader promotion.
  • For you (and your audience in your Nordic walking Facebook group), this offers an external challenge platform which can complement your group’s consistent walking focus.
