The virtual challenge appears to be a good way to build positive habits and to build community as well. The idea is to think of a habit you want to build and use the virtual challenge as a fun way to do it.

Here’s a summary of the 4 Summits Virtual Challenge in November 2025 and an invitation to participate in a 4 Summits Virtual Challenge in January 2026. That sounds like a great time to turn our New Year’s resolutions into permanent habits.

Some background information:

  • The 4 Summits Virtual Challenge was created by Lauren DeLong, founder of York Nordic, a Nordic walking poles supplier. She is doing these virtual challenges as part of her other enterprise, Motivation Mindset Labs.
  • The 4 Summits Virtual Challenge helps people build positive habits, using simulations of expeditions to well-known walking/hiking venues.

4 Summits Virtual Challenge

January 2026

Of the 25 people who participated in the inaugural challenge, 6 of us formed a sub-group that stayed in touch with each other. I was the expedition leader for that group.

The simulated expeditions were:

  • Mt. Washington (USA)
  • Grand Canyon Rim to Rim (USA)
  • Mount Kilimanjaro (Tanzania)
  • Cinque Terre (Italy)

All the participants reported these changes in motivation:

  • Walked more frequently and covered more distance.
  • Reported fewer negative emotions.
  • Motivation shifted toward joy, meaning, and internal drive.
  • Strengthened habits, rediscovered walking tools, and felt more supported.

The January 4 Summits Virtual Challenge starts on January 4. In addition to the link below, I attached the email with registration information.

Register by December 28. Use the discount code, LEROY50, to get a 50% discount on the registration fee (the discount code field appears when you check out; final fee comes to $15).

If you register, let me know, and we’ll form our own team. I’ll be able to explain things and will provide some opportunities to meet online to discuss the experience.

The January simulated expeditions are:

  • Camino de Santiago (Spain)
  • Kalalau Trail (Hawaii, USA)
  • Tour du Mont Blanc (France, Italy, Switzerland)
  • Inca’s Trail to Machu Picchu (Peru)
