When we think of Nordic walking, we imagine pastoral paths, forest trails, or quiet parks. We may not think about walking downtown, but it can be an intersting experience. Several of us walkers went through downtown Birmingham, Alabama and enjoyed seeing the city from a walker’s perspective.
I came across a reflective article about walking in a city you might enjoy.
Main point: “There’s no better way to soothe the soul – and get to know a town – than striding through its streets.”
More about it:
- “Increasingly, urban adventurers are taking this pastime even further and deciding to walk or run all of the thousands of streets that make up their warts-and-all cities.”
- “You realise individual communities make up a city – it is not one unified place.”
- “…it was a lot about chatting with people, and going into little shops that I hadn’t seen before, and taking photos and having picnics in the park and really engaging with the city.”
Takeaways:
- The article seemed to focus on runners. However, Nordic walking can offer a fascinating way to move about.
- Because it’s slower than running, you’re able to see and experience more.
- Because it most likely will look unusual, someone may make a conment. That’s an opportunity to stop and chat.
- While you can enjoy getting to know your city, consider safety as well. Because Nordic walking can be such a social activity, groups can go around a city quite well.
