In this embedded video announcing Nordic walking instructor training (I hope the translation function is correct), you can see some examples of arm swing for generating power and engaging the upper body.

In addition to fantastic scenery and ideas for warm up movements, you can see the Nordic walkers planting the poles on the front swing and releasing for the back swing.

Releasing the poles on the backswing allows for a bigger arm movement, which engages the back muscles. The back muscles are the largest muscles in the upper body.
