The X post is a good illustration of why you want to using Nordic walkiong poles rather than trekking poles for fitness. Nordic walking poles have the added benefit of facilitating balance on hikes as well.

Why it matters:

1. Engages the Whole Body vs. Primarily Stabilizes

  • Nordic walking poles are designed for active propulsion, engaging upper body muscles—especially the shoulders, arms, chest, and core—to drive the body forward.

  • Trekking poles are used mainly for stability and support, especially on uneven terrain, which results in less intentional muscle engagement and upper-body exercise.

2. Improves Cardiovascular Fitness vs. Reduces Joint Load

  • Nordic walking significantly boosts cardiovascular intensity because it turns walking into a full-body aerobic workout.

  • Trekking helps reduce strain on joints like knees and hips by distributing load, but it doesn’t increase heart rate or cardiovascular benefit as much.

3. Promotes Natural Gait and Rhythm vs. Disrupts Stride

  • Nordic walking encourages a natural walking stride with coordinated arm-leg movement, which can improve walking efficiency and posture.

  • Trekking poles, used for balance and intermittent support, often interfere with rhythm and may shorten or alter stride mechanics.

4. Designed for Forward Thrust vs. Vertical Support

  • Nordic walking poles are angled backward with straps that allow you to push off and release, generating forward momentum. The push-off engages the back muscles and launches you forward.

  • Trekking poles are placed vertically or diagonally in front of or beside the body to provide upward or lateral support against gravity and instability.

5. Enhances Core Strength and Mobility vs. Prevents Falls

  • Nordic walking strengthens the core through dynamic movement and rotation, improving balance long-term. In the meantime, Nordic walking poles can also prevent falls.

  • Trekking poles enhance immediate safety by preventing slips and falls in rugged environments but don’t challenge or build core strength as directly.
