An article give some background about the human heart and what makes it special.

Main point: “…the human heart is an outlier, distinctly different from those of our closest relatives, the great apes, including chimpanzees, bonobos, orangutans and gorillas.”

More about it:

  • “…changes to humans’ bodies were associated with a much greater metabolic demand, requiring more blood to be pumped to our muscles and brain.”
  • Differences in human hearts from those of apes, chimpanzees, and monkeys make it possible for “the human heart to pump a larger volume of blood with each beat.”
  • Pumping blood at higher volumes “meets the heightened demands of our physical activity and larger brains.”

Why it matters:

  • #NordicWalking enhances heart health by creating a degree of stress to which the heart must adapt.
  • When #NordicWalking, track your heart rate to stay within a range that supports your goals.
    • Calculate target heart rate range:
      • Maximum heart rate = 220 minus your age.
      • Moderate intensity = from 50% to 70% of maximum heart rate.
      • High intensity = 70% to 85% of maximum heart rate.
    • Ways to track your heart rate:
      • Use a smart watch.
      • Manually check your pulse.
