Strength Begins at Your Foundation

The most important muscles in the body are not always the ones that receive the most attention.

We know about strength training for the chest, back, shoulders, thighs, and abdominal muscles.

Yet every time we walk across a room, climb a stair, rise onto our toes, or recover from a shift in balance, we depend on a comparatively small group of muscles below the knee.

The calf complex includes:

  • the gastrocnemius—the larger, more visible muscle crossing both the knee and ankle—and the
  • deeper soleus, which crosses the ankle but not the knee.

Together, they help point the foot downward, raise the heel, support standing, and propel the body forward during walking.

That is why strength begins at your foundation.

Small Muscles Sustain Movement

The calves do not merely add shape to the lower leg. They repeatedly manage body weight.

During a normal walking stride, the heel contacts the ground, the body moves over the planted foot, and the heel begins to rise. The ankle plantar flexors—the muscles that push the foot downward—help support the body and contribute to forward propulsion during the latter part of the step. The gastrocnemius and soleus participate in this process in related but somewhat different ways.

You may not notice that work on a flat, easy walk. You are more likely to notice it when:

  • climbing a hill;
  • walking upstairs;
  • increasing your pace;
  • carrying something heavy;
  • moving across uneven ground; or
  • trying to continue after fatigue sets in.

These situations expose the difference between having enough strength for an ordinary step and having enough reserve for a demanding one.

Mobility Starts Below the Knee

Mobility is often discussed as though it were located primarily in the hips or knees. Those joints are certainly important, but the ankle and foot form the body’s point of contact with the ground.

If the ankle lacks strength, mobility, or control, the body must find another way to move. A person may shorten the stride, reduce walking speed, shift work toward the knees and hips, or avoid terrain that feels uncertain.

Research in older adults connects ankle plantar-flexor strength most clearly with demanding forms of dynamic balance—the ability to respond while moving or when stability is challenged. The relationship is weaker for simply standing still.

That distinction matters. Real life rarely asks us only to stand motionless on a perfect surface. It asks us to step off curbs, turn, climb, descend, carry objects, negotiate slopes, and react when something does not go as planned.

Every Step Relies on a Final Push

The calf muscles contribute to the final push that helps move the body into the next step. Age-related reductions in plantar-flexor muscle size, strength, and power can therefore affect gait. Recent research has found smaller calf-muscle cross-sectional area and lower plantar-flexor torque among older adults compared with younger adults.

That does not mean aging inevitably leads to immobility. It means that the lower legs deserve deliberate attention.

Walking is an excellent foundation, but a complete approach should combine walking with progressive strength and balance training. Evidence concerning Nordic walking in adults over 50 suggests that it may improve physical functioning, although the certainty of the evidence varies and walking may need to be combined with other forms of exercise for broader benefits.

Why Nordic Walking Belongs Here

Nordic walking does not isolate the calves. That is one of its strengths.

With sound technique, the poles encourage purposeful posture, reciprocal arm action, and a more deliberate stride. The walker becomes attentive to the entire movement cycle: planting, loading, propelling, and transitioning into the next step.

Nordic walking can therefore become a practical classroom for understanding how the body moves from the ground up. It also gives calf training a purpose. We are not doing heel raises simply to become better at heel raises. We are strengthening the lower leg so that walking can become more capable, confident, and adventurous.

A sensible beginning might include:

  • two or three Nordic walks each week;
  • two weekly calf-strength sessions;
  • both straight-knee and bent-knee heel raises;
  • balance work performed near stable support; and
  • gradual exposure to hills or stairs.

Begin with a level you can control. Rise smoothly, pause briefly at the top, and lower under control. Progress through additional repetitions, greater range of motion, single-leg variations, or added resistance—but not all at once.

The aim is not just to develop bigger calves. The aim is to preserve the strength and endurance needed to keep walking, climbing, exploring, and staying engaged in the life ahead.
